Energy Healing and Christianity: Are They in Conflict?

One of the most common concerns about Reiki and energy healing is this: “Isn’t this against my faith?”

The good news is energy healing is not a religion, nor is it in conflict with most spiritual paths. In fact, many Christian hospitals and clergy embrace it as a form of compassionate care.

Energy Healing Is Not Worship or Doctrine

Reiki and other energy-based practices do not involve invoking spirits, gods, or religious rites. Practitioners act as conduits of healing energy, much like the biblical concept of “laying on of hands.” In fact, Reiki is often seen as a God-given gift of healing, supporting the body’s natural ability to restore balance.

As one Catholic chaplain put it: “We see Reiki as an extension of God’s love in action.”

Christian Hospitals and Chaplain Programs

• Mercy Medical Center (Catholic) offers Reiki to cancer patients and their families.

• Bon Secours Health System, rooted in Catholic tradition, has used Reiki as part of holistic care programs.

• Hospice and palliative care programs, often staffed by interfaith chaplains, use Reiki to support spiritual peace and emotional comfort.

Scripture and Support

While Reiki is not explicitly in the Bible, the spirit of healing through love, light, and touch is deeply rooted in Christian scripture:

“They will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.” Mark 16:18

“Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers.” 3 John 1:2
